Travel

The new look for Travel…
As we begin to open up the world of travel again, I’m beginning to think about what that might look like for us.
These are some of the things you may experience as a little different!

1. I will eliminate the use of reusable name tags.

2. Face masks will be highly recommended for use on the bus.

3. We will disembark the bus using airplane dismissal style instead of switching sides.

4. While the bus has installed hand sanitizer at the entrance and the rear of the bus, you may want
to bring a small personal container for times you are not on the bus.

5. Buffets will likely become more obsolete and be replaced with travelers being served.

Monday Morning Memories

Since we are still limited in the area of travel and folks seem to be missing the adventure, I thought I could offer
an opportunity to travel back in our historical archives and enjoy the adventures of the past. I will select a poem from
a past trip and read it each Monday morning at 9:00 a.m. beginning on August 3 rd. You can enjoy listening by going
to Ann’s Adventures page on Facebook. I will live stream at 9:00 a.m. If you are not available at that time, you can
always listen to it later.

can mail your packet or you can pick it up at another time.

If you have concerns about the Grand Hotel, please see the article below to learn about the changes they
have implemented there, the changes on the carriage ride, changes on the ferry and around town.

An update from MRPA…Regarding Covid Concerns

Ferry (Star Line)
Star Line is taking the situation very seriously and doing the best they can to promote social distancing and safety
protocols. The biggest Regarding Covid Concerns, is the cleaning procedure. The boat is being sprayed once
passengers get off the boat and before the next group is allowed to board. Masks are mandatory for all crew and passengers.

Carriage Tours
The biggest change with the tours is the fact they put barriers between the seat rows. This material is the same
as the side curtains and matches the carriages very well. It looks like they have always been there, but this is new. In
town the carriages are being cleaned and sprayed between the groups boarding.

Downtown
There are several hand sanitizing stations throughout the downtown. These are the large pump style that is made
by distilleries so it is very runny and high alcohol content.

Grand Hotel
The Grand Hotel has gone to extensive lengths to protect the guests. Much thought and care has gone into their
procedures. Here are the highlights:

• Everyone inside the hotel wore a mask. It didn’t seem to be an issue, everyone seemed compliant.
• The check in and concierge desk have Plexiglas shields installed and hand sanitation stations were throughout the hotel.
• Social distance decals are on the floor in some areas to help space you out.
• The furniture in the parlor is more spaced out.
• The rocking chairs on the front porch are spaced and staggered.
• No in room accessories. Everything has been removed for your safety.

*The housekeeping service and turndown service is not entering your room. The idea is once you have your
key, you are the only one coming and going into your room. It is very comforting to know that you enter a
clean room and are the only one touching things. If a guest needs new towels or any housekeeping item it will
be delivered to the door.

• Upon check in you are handed a bag with your room key, hand sanitizer and a small info sheet (most of the info you usually get in your room).
• The Dining room looked about the same. Some tables were removed to make way for larger buffet lines. They spaced everyone out as they were seated.
• All servers wore masks.
• Cream and sugar were brought out on request.
• The buffet line is served by staff. Guests do not touch anything on the food line.

Overall the experience was very good, safe and it felt like everyone was working together for the safety and
wellbeing of everyone else. There are changes and while all the extra housekeeping and amenities are different,
they are doing this for the safety of everyone. It’s a different experience no doubt, but it was so wonderful to
walk back in the Grand Hotel and see all the familiar sites and faces.

Oberammergau… Passion Play
Preparations are already underway for the next Passion Play in the tiny Bavarian hamlet of Oberammergau. The shows in 2022 may seem distant but the excitement is already building for the next production. Collette Vacations is hard at work developing new tours
that showcase must-see European destinations and the epic Passion Play that depicts the life and death of Jesus.
It began all the way back in 1633. Oberammergau was suffering from the Bubonic Plague. The surviving villagers
appealed for Divine intervention to save their families. They vowed that if God were to spare them, they would
perform a Passion Play every ten years. They say not a single person fell victim to the Plague after that. Keeping
their promise, the people of Oberammergau performed the first play in 1634 and have continued to do so throughout
the centuries.
Today, many of Oberammergau’s residents still take part in this powerful work of art featuring dramatic
performances, beautiful music and choral accompaniment. The residents of Oberammergau will again perform The
Passion Play in 2022. Collette will be there, sharing in the magnificence of this performance with several itineraries
that showcase the charm and beauty of central Europe.
The production involves over 2,000 performers, musicians and stage technicians, all residents of the village.
The play runs for 5 – 5 1⁄2 hours, starting at 1:30 pm and ending at 9:30 pm on the day we will be there. It is
only one play each day with an intermission of 3 hours for dinner. It is in German with a wonderful musical score.
The play is now performed repeatedly over the course of five months during every year ending in zero. 102
performances took place from 15 May until 3 October 2010 and is next scheduled for 2020. However, the Covid-19
Pandemic caused another shutdown of this small community. They are now hoping to offer it during the year
2022 instead. We had plans to see the Passion Play later this month which was cancelled due to the current
pandemic.
There are a few people who would like to see it and dates have just been released! We are scheduled for the
trip August 15 – 27, 2022. Yes, it is two years from now, but we are trying to make sure we have space on this trip.

2021 SHOWS
Many theatres are starting to announce their 2020 – 2021 Seasons! I’m watching the schedules and it looks like
some good shows are coming next year. I’ll be keeping you posted with ideas and suggestions!
Wharton is offering Jesus Christ Superstar; Pretty Woman the Musical; Frozen; and CATS. They will also offer the
Canadian Brass 50th Anniversary. We’ve seen them before and they are great! Fisher Theatre is hoping to offer Hamilton again next year. They are also offering Hair Spray and Frozen and another show called “Ain’t Too Proud” about the life and times of the Temptations. The Stranahan in Toledo is rescheduling Lion King and are planning to offer Come From Away!
